Our house will be a round house, built as an 'earth-bag' construction, it will have a diameter of 8 metres (giving a floor area of 50 square metres).
Earth bags are basically woven bags filled with mud and clay, 966 bags are needed and all have to be filled and positioned by hand. We've calculated this at 42 tons
The earth-bag walls will be insulated with straw on the inside and both inside and out will be smooth rendered with clay.
Reciprocal roofs are self-supporting and are perfect for our round house as a central supporting pillar would change the usable space and spoil the visually open nature of both the living area and the mezzanine.
Our roof will use 12 key trusses, each one laying on the last with a rummy line of 26cm and an angle of 30 degrees.
Using a 15cm diameter poles, our roof will have a pitch of 30 degrees and an opening of 1 metre in the centre, over which we will fit a triple-glazed glass dome.
